In a couple of weeks we will finish our exciting CLC-MIRI research master course included in the UPC Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (specialization Computer Networks and Distributed Systems). With Leandro Navarro and myself we wanted to introduce new execution environments needed to manage the computing resources and simplify the development and integration of the different types of applications and services at today Internet-scale systems. I’m in charge of the Big Data part and I had the opportunity to invite some colleagues from industry to explain their experience to my students in this area. Introduction to R. PhD Aleix Ruiz de Villa. Data analyst at TSS – Transport Simulation Systems, coorganizer of Barcelona’s R users group (RugBcn). We will see R’s main features and recent developments: why it is a so popular tool in the machine learning community. We will also see some applications in Big Data.
– Guest Lecture II:
Learning from Big Data using the Cloud. PhD Jose A. Ortega Ruiz (Jao) – CTO and Co-founder of BigML.org. Jao holds a Ph.D. in theoretical Physics (Barcelona) and a BS in Computer Science (Madrid), and he turned to computers in the 90s working for telecoms and aerospace (Indra), AI and web security startups (Isoco, Scytl), our internet overlords (Google), next-generation user interfaces (Oblong), with an interlude in academia teaching programming and networks (Universitat Autònoma). jao co-founded BigML in 2011, where he’s CTO and hacker-at-large. He has been involved since the 90s in Free Software projects and programming languages (GNU MDK, Geiser, xmobar, etc.)
– Guest Lecture III:
Mining Big Data in Real-Time with Massive Online Analysis (MOA). PhD Albert Bifet – Big Data Research Scientist at Yahoo!Research. He is the author of a book on Adaptive Stream Mining and Pattern Learning and Mining from Evolving Data Streams. He is one of the core developers of MOA software environment for implementing algorithms and running experiments for online learning from evolving data streams
